“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.
With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”
Eph.6:18
“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire,
and it shall be done for you.” John 15:7
From Ephesians 6:18 it is clear that there are different kinds of prayers. This
will also imply that each kind of prayer will have its own rules that apply to
it. It also means that different situations may require different kinds of
prayers to deal with each one. Prayer may therefore be seen as a toolbox
with differing tools. Just as when you have a problem in the house you will
look into your toolbox to find the right kind of tool to fix that problem. A tool
that fixes a particular problem may not work against different kinds of
problems. For example, where you require a spanner to tighten or loosen you
will not be able to do it with a screwdriver or a hammer, and vice versa.
Similarly, when a need arises one of the things you should ascertain before
you even begin to pray is to find out the right kind of prayer that will work for
that particular situation. If you apply the wrong kind of prayer to that need it
will be like a man trying to use a hammer to do what requires a screwdriver to
fix. This can be a reason why some prayers fail to produce the intended
result.
