“The strong spirit of a man sustains him in bodily pain or trouble, but a weak
and broken spirit who can raise up or bear?” Prov.18:14 AMPC
You are a spirit, you have a soul and you live in a body. The most important
part of you is your spirit. He is referred to as the inward/inner man: “For
which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is
renewed day by day.” 2Cor.4:16.
He is also referred as the hidden man of the heart: “But let it be the hidden man of the
heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which
is in the sight of God of great price.” 1Peter 3:4.
He is also referred as the heart of a man: “Guard your heart above all else, for it
determines the course of your life.” Prov.4:23. It is obvious that the condition of your
spirit determines the direction of your life and ultimately how well you end.
Our memory verse also shows that the strength of your spirit determines how well you
handle adversity. As long as you are in this fallen world you will face various seasons in
your life. Among these seasons is adversity.
This is one of the reasons Apostle Paul prayed for the believers in Ephesus that they be
strengthened with might in the inner man. “that He would grant you, according to the
riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man,”
Eph.3:16.
Your spirit will be strengthened through feeding him with the word of God. “For I delight
in the law of God after the inward man:” Rom.7:22. “Unless Your law had been my delight,
I would then have perished in my affliction” Psalm 119:92. Feeding on the Word of God is
not only reading but also studying, meditating and practising the word of God.
You also build your spirit by praying in the Spirit often. “But you, beloved, building
yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,” Jude 1:20. “A person
who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of
prophecy strengthens the entire church.” 1COR.14:4 NLT
