“But I say, walk and live [habitually] in the [Holy] Spirit [responsive to and
controlled and guided by the Spirit]; then you will certainly not gratify the
cravings and desires of the flesh (of human nature without God). For the
desires of the flesh are opposed to the [Holy] Spirit, and the [desires of the]
Spirit are opposed to the flesh (godless human nature); for these are
antagonistic to each other [continually withstanding and in conflict with
each other], so that you are not free but are prevented from doing what you
desire to do.” Galatians
We are instructed to walk in the spirit. When we do so we will not gratify the desires of
the flesh. To walk in the spirit is to allow the fruit of the spirit find expression in our lives.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Gal.5:22-23. The extent to which
the fruit of the spirit manifests or dominate our lives is a measure of the level of our
spiritual maturity. Spiritual growth therefore requires growing in the level of expression of
these gifts. Whenever we are not exhibiting any of these gifts in any situation in our lives
we are walking in the flesh. It will be good to ask ourselves before we speak, entertain a
thought or do something whether speaking, thinking or acting this way is an expression
of these gifts in fruit of the spirit. If the answer is no, we should refrain from speaking,
thinking or acting in that way.
Walking in the spirit is God’s flow. It in in this flow that the power of God can effectively
work for us It is here that we are protected. It is in this flow that we can fulfill the plan
God has authored for our lives.
We do not ask God to give us these fruits. These fruits are already in every believer
when the Holy Ghost came to dwell in us at new birth. What we need is to acquire the
skills of yielding to the Holy Spirit so that these fruits are can fully develop and manifest
in our lives.
