AN ESTABLISHED HEART. Part 3

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. Prov.4:23 NLT

Our motives determine our actions. Motives are formed in the heart. God looks at the
motives behind the actions before He determine what reward or punishment their
actions deserve. “But I, the LORD, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give
all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.” NLT.

Secondly the thought of your heart determines what comes out of your mouth
especially during the unguarded moments in your life. “The good man brings good
things out of the good treasure of his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the
evil treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.”
Luke
6:45
. What you treasure in your heart not only influences what you say but also defiles
or justifies a man. “But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles
you. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality,
theft, lying, and slander.”
Matt.15:18-19 NLT

What you treasure in your heart determines the direction of your life. This is because
what you treasure in your heart overflows into your mouth influencing what you say.
What you say is very important in what you have or do not have. “Death and life are in
the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” Prov.18:21.

In view of the foregoing, it is very important for us to guard our hearts with diligence.
There are thousands of thoughts that come into our minds each day. By asking us to
guard our hearts means that we have the power to determine which thoughts we should
allow into our hearts and which ones we should not allow in. Some of these thoughts
come from what we see and what we listen to. If you control the company you keep, the
things you listen to and watch you can control some of thoughts that come to your
mind. Phil.4:8 gives us the standard with which to examine thoughts before deciding
whether to let it in or not. “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever
things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever
things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there
is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”
Phil.4:8
