SPIRITUAL GROWTH. Part 4

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a
living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be
conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may
prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
Rom.12:1-2
Man is a three-fold being. Man is a spirit; he has a soul and he lives in a body. “Now may
the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and
body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1Thess.5:23. Your
spirit is the real you. “But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I
have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.” 1COR.9:27. Notice that
the I and the body are referred to separately. The I is your spirit that discipline your
body. When you get born again, it was your spirit that was regenerated. Your body and
soul were not regenerated at new birth. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new
creation. The old things have passed away; behold, the new has come into being.” This
verse refers to your spirit that is recreated. Your body did not change at new birth
because neither your height nor your skin color changed when you got born again.
The regeneration of your spirit was done by God. “He saved us, not because of the
righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving
us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.” Titus 3:5 NLT. We are the ones that
should do something with our bodies and souls. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by
the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to
God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and
acceptable and perfect will of God.” Rom.12:1-2. Your recreated spirit loves to do the will
of God. However, your flesh/body wants to do the opposite.” So then, those who are in
the flesh cannot please God.” Rom.8:8. Hence, while your spirit wants to pull you to God,
your flesh wants to pull you to the world. “For the flesh desires what is contrary to the
Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so
that you are not to do whatever you want.” Gal.5:17. The outcome of this struggle is
determined by which one your soul sides. If your soul sides with your spirit, then your
spirit will dominate your body. If your soul sides with your flesh, your body will dominate
your flesh.
Your soul controls your mind, your will and your emotions. A renewed mind will side with
your spirit while an unrenewed mind will side with your flesh.
