“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke
upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for
your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matt. 11:28-30
Recapping what we have said so far. True rest is given by the Lord Jesus Christ. In
otherwards there is no true rest outside of Jesus. To enjoy true rest, you must recognize
Jesus as the source and come to him by getting born again. Secondly you must be
yoked up to Him through continual fellowship with Him and His word. The third
important thing necessary in enjoying true rest is learning from Him. There are many
things we should learn from Him. Two of these are mentioned in our text. These are His
gentleness and Humility of heart. Gentleness means being considerate of others born
out of surrender to and trust in God. A gentle person is not rough or violent but tender-
hearted towards others even when provoked. Jesus exemplified this. Let us look at
some scriptural passages on His gentleness: “who, when He was reviled, did not revile
in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who
judges righteously;” 1 Peter 2:23. “He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He
opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its
shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.” Isaiah 53:7
A humble person is one that is not boastful or self promoting and who is totally
submissive to the authority of the word of God. Humility is first and foremost of the
heart. A few examples of Jesus’ humility include the following scriptural verses. “Let this
mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not
consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the
form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in
appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death,
even the death of the cross.” Phil.2:5-8
“Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.”
Heb.5:8
“I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I
do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.” John 5:30
THOUGHT OF THE WEEK
Physical inactivity does not equate to rest. If you do not have rest on the inside you
cannot experience rest on the outside.
